Does Enento Group Oyj (HEL:ENENTO) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Enento Group Oyj (HEL:ENENTO) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt A Problem?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Enento Group Oyj's Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Enento Group Oyj had debt of €144.6m at the end of June 2023, a reduction from €157.5m over a year. However, it does have €5.27m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about €139.3m.
How Strong Is Enento Group Oyj's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Enento Group Oyj had liabilities of €33.6m due within a year, and liabilities of €168.3m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had €5.27m in cash and €27.4m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €169.2m.
Enento Group Oyj has a market capitalization of €542.0m, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.
We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
Enento Group Oyj's debt is 3.3 times its EBITDA, and its EBIT cover its interest expense 7.0 times over. Taken together this implies that, while we wouldn't want to see debt levels rise, we think it can handle its current leverage. Sadly, Enento Group Oyj's EBIT actually dropped 2.1% in the last year. If that earnings trend continues then its debt load will grow heavy like the heart of a polar bear watching its sole cub. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Enento Group Oyj's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. So it's worth checking how much of that EBIT is backed by free cash flow. During the last three years, Enento Group Oyj generated free cash flow amounting to a very robust 94% of its EBIT, more than we'd expect. That positions it well to pay down debt if desirable to do so.
Our View
When it comes to the balance sheet, the standout positive for Enento Group Oyj was the fact that it seems able to convert EBIT to free cash flow confidently. However, our other observations weren't so heartening. For instance it seems like it has to struggle a bit handle its debt, based on its EBITDA,. Considering this range of data points, we think Enento Group Oyj is in a good position to manage its debt levels. But a word of caution: we think debt levels are high enough to justify ongoing monitoring. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example - Enento Group Oyj has 4 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
