The board of Relais Group Oyj (HEL:RELAIS) has announced that it will pay a dividend of €0.22 per share on the 11th of November. This will take the annual payment to 3.5% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Relais Group Oyj's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Relais Group Oyj was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 56.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 42% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Relais Group Oyj Is Still Building Its Track Record

The company has maintained a consistent dividend for a few years now, but we would like to see a longer track record before relying on it. The annual payment during the last 4 years was €0.10 in 2020, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.44. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 45% over that duration. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Relais Group Oyj has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 23% per annum. Relais Group Oyj is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.

Relais Group Oyj Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Relais Group Oyj is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
