Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Aena S.M.E., S.A. (BME:AENA) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. As you can see below, Aena S.M.E had €7.89b of debt at September 2024, down from €8.34b a year prior. However, it does have €2.19b in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about €5.70b.
How Healthy Is Aena S.M.E's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Aena S.M.E had liabilities of €3.27b falling due within a year, and liabilities of €6.38b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had €2.19b in cash and €1.01b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling €6.45b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

And its commanding EBIT of 10.9 times its interest expense, implies the debt load is as light as a peacock feather. It is well worth noting that Aena S.M.E's EBIT shot up like bamboo after rain, gaining 33% in the last twelve months. That'll make it easier to manage its debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So it's worth checking how much of that EBIT is backed by free cash flow. The good news is that Aena S.M.E's demonstrated ability to grow its EBIT delights us like a fluffy puppy does a toddler. And the good news does not stop there, as its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow also supports that impression! We would also note that Infrastructure industry companies like Aena S.M.E commonly do use debt without problems. Overall, we don't think Aena S.M.E is taking any bad risks, as its debt load seems modest. So the balance sheet looks pretty healthy, to us.
