We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Mapfre, S.A. (BME:MAP).
What Is Insider Buying?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.

Mapfre Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider Luis Hernando De Larramendi Martínez for €2.3m worth of shares, at about €2.65 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of €2.55. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

insider Rosa García García bought just €1.0k worth of shares in that time. That's not much at all. Overall, we don't think these recent trades are particularly informative, one way or the other.
Insider Ownership of Mapfre
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Based on our data, Mapfre insiders have about 0.04% of the stock, worth approximately €3.3m. We do note, however, it is possible insiders have an indirect interest through a private company or other corporate structure. We prefer to see high levels of insider ownership.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Mapfre Insiders?
Insider purchases may have been minimal, in the last three months, but there was no selling at all. Overall the buying isn't worth writing home about. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. The transactions are fine but it'd be more encouraging if Mapfre insiders bought more shares in the company.
