Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Profithol, S.A.'s (BME:SPH) Revenues Despite 98% Price Jump
Those holding Profithol, S.A. (BME:SPH) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 98% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 61% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, considering around half the companies operating in Spain's Electrical industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1x, you may still consider Profithol as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.2x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Profithol Performed Recently?
For example, consider that Profithol's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Profithol's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 30%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 261% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 8.8% shows it's noticeably more attractive.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Profithol's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Profithol's P/S
Profithol's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Profithol revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Profithol (of which 3 make us uncomfortable!) you should know about.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
