Here's Why We Think Coop Pank (TAL:CPA1T) Is Well Worth Watching

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Coop Pank (TAL:CPA1T). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Coop Pank Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years Coop Pank grew its EPS by 12% per year. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of Coop Pank's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note Coop Pank's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 25% to €28m. That's a real positive.

Coop Pank isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of €200m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Coop Pank Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Coop Pank insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have €20m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 9.9% of the company; visible skin in the game.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Coop Pank with market caps between €83m and €331m is about €412k.

The Coop Pank CEO received total compensation of just €147k in the year to . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Should You Add Coop Pank To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Coop Pank is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Coop Pank, but the pretty picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Coop Pank has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

Although Coop Pank certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
