Here's Why NTG Nordic Transport Group (CPH:NTG) Can Manage Its Debt Responsibly

So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that NTG Nordic Transport Group A/S (CPH:NTG) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?

When Is Debt A Problem?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. A Look At NTG Nordic Transport Group's Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, NTG Nordic Transport Group had liabilities of kr.2.08b due within 12 months, and liabilities of kr.2.32b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of kr.407.0m as well as receivables valued at kr.1.89b due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling kr.2.11b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This deficit isn't so bad because NTG Nordic Transport Group is worth kr.4.17b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.

That positions it well to pay down debt if desirable to do so.

When it comes to the balance sheet, the standout positive for NTG Nordic Transport Group was the fact that it seems able to convert EBIT to free cash flow confidently. However, our other observations weren't so heartening. For instance it seems like it has to struggle a bit to grow its EBIT. When we consider all the factors mentioned above, we do feel a bit cautious about NTG Nordic Transport Group's use of debt. While debt does have its upside in higher potential returns, we think shareholders should definitely consider how debt levels might make the stock more risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
