Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that Movinn A/S (CPH:MOVINN) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Movinn Carry?
As you can see below, Movinn had kr.21.1m of debt, at September 2024, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, it also had kr.4.77m in cash, and so its net debt is kr.16.3m.
How Strong Is Movinn's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Movinn had liabilities of kr.12.0m due within a year, and liabilities of kr.19.0m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of kr.4.77m and kr.4.47m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by kr.21.8m.
This deficit isn't so bad because Movinn is worth kr.49.2m, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is Movinn's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Over 12 months, Movinn reported revenue of kr.89m, which is a gain of 8.1%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.
Caveat Emptor
Over the last twelve months Movinn produced an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss. Indeed, it lost kr.3.4m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. Another cause for caution is that is bled kr.3.6m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
