Fresenius Medical Care AG (ETR:FME) Stock's On A Decline: Are Poor Fundamentals The Cause?

Fresenius Medical Care (ETR:FME) has had a rough month with its share price down 12%. Given that stock prices are usually driven by a company’s fundamentals over the long term, which in this case look pretty weak, we decided to study the company's key financial indicators. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Fresenius Medical Care's ROE today.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Fresenius Medical Care is:

6.5% = €907m ÷ €14b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. So, this means that for every €1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of €0.07.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

A Side By Side comparison of Fresenius Medical Care's Earnings Growth And 6.5% ROE

On the face of it, Fresenius Medical Care's ROE is not much to talk about. However, its ROE is similar to the industry average of 6.2%, so we won't completely dismiss the company. But then again, Fresenius Medical Care's five year net income shrunk at a rate of 17%. Bear in mind, the company does have a slightly low ROE. Hence, this goes some way in explaining the shrinking earnings.

So, as a next step, we compared Fresenius Medical Care's performance against the industry and were disappointed to discover that while the company has been shrinking its earnings, the industry has been growing its earnings at a rate of 20% over the last few years.

Is Fresenius Medical Care Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?

Fresenius Medical Care's declining earnings is not surprising given how the company is spending most of its profits in paying dividends, judging by its three-year median payout ratio of 64% (or a retention ratio of 36%). The business is only left with a small pool of capital to reinvest - A vicious cycle that doesn't benefit the company in the long-run. Moreover, Fresenius Medical Care has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth. Accordingly, the expected drop in the payout ratio explains the expected increase in the company's ROE to 8.4%, over the same period.

Summary

As a result of its low ROE and lack of much reinvestment into the business, the company has seen a disappointing earnings growth rate.
