Can You Imagine How ZEAL Network's (ETR:TIMA) Shareholders Feel About The 85% Share Price Increase?
Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. For example, the ZEAL Network SE (ETR:TIMA) share price is up 85% in the last year, clearly besting the market return of around 5.9% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Also impressive, the stock is up 81% over three years, making long term shareholders happy, too.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year ZEAL Network saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so we would not have expected to see the share price up. It may be that the company has done well on other metrics.
We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.9% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. Unfortunately ZEAL Network's fell 38% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, ZEAL Network's TSR for the last year was 89%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that ZEAL Network shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 89% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 11% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
