Little Excitement Around Bertrandt Aktiengesellschaft's (ETR:BDT) Revenues As Shares Take 26% Pounding
The Bertrandt Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:BDT) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 57% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, Bertrandt's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Professional Services industry in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.8x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Bertrandt's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Bertrandt's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Bertrandt's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.4%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 30% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 2.0% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 6.4% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Bertrandt's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Bertrandt's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Bertrandt maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
