SGL Carbon SE (ETR:SGL) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 29%

The SGL Carbon SE (ETR:SGL) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 58% share price decline.

Following the heavy fall in price, SGL Carbon may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electrical industry in Germany have P/S ratios greater than 1.1x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How SGL Carbon Has Been Performing

SGL Carbon hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Keen to find out how analysts think SGL Carbon's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start .

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

SGL Carbon's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 5.8% decrease to the company's top line. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.1% per annum during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 9.9% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that SGL Carbon's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On SGL Carbon's P/S

The southerly movements of SGL Carbon's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that SGL Carbon maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
