Investors Aren't Entirely Convinced By KION GROUP AG's (ETR:KGX) Earnings

When close to half the companies in Germany have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may consider KION GROUP AG (ETR:KGX) as an attractive investment with its 15.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, KION GROUP has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For KION GROUP?

KION GROUP's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 278% last year. As a result, it also grew EPS by 13% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 24% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that KION GROUP is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of KION GROUP's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

Having said that, be aware KION GROUP is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.
