Some RMS Mezzanine, a.s. (SEP:PVT) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 38% Pounding
RMS Mezzanine, a.s. (SEP:PVT) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 38% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 33% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, RMS Mezzanine's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.8x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Czech Republic, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at RMS Mezzanine over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as RMS Mezzanine's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.9%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 20% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's alarming that RMS Mezzanine's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On RMS Mezzanine's P/E
There's still some solid strength behind RMS Mezzanine's P/E, if not its share price lately. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of RMS Mezzanine revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
