Investors Don't See Light At End Of Anker Innovations Limited's (SZSE:300866) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 26%
Anker Innovations Limited (SZSE:300866) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 15% share price drop.
Following the heavy fall in price, Anker Innovations' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 17.3x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 28x and even P/E's above 52x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Recent times have been advantageous for Anker Innovations as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Anker Innovations would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 30% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 69% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 17% each year during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 24% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Anker Innovations' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Anker Innovations' P/E
Anker Innovations' recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Anker Innovations maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
