Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology (SZSE:300656) shareholders are still up 90% over 5 years despite pulling back 8.1% in the past week
Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. To wit, the Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology share price has climbed 87% in five years, easily topping the market return of 11% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 8.6% in the last year, including dividends.
Although Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology has shed CN¥402m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology actually saw its EPS drop 11% per year. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
We doubt the modest 0.1% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. In contrast revenue growth of 5.7% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology's TSR for the last 5 years was 90%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Shenzhen MinDe Electronics Technology shareholders gained a total return of 8.6% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 14% a year, over half a decade) look better. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
