Fewer Investors Than Expected Jumping On Hitevision Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002955)

When close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 33x, you may consider Hitevision Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002955) as an attractive investment with its 19x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Hitevision hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Hitevision would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 14%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 136% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 94% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 38%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Hitevision is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Hitevision's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for Hitevision that you should be aware of.
