Orbbec Inc. (SHSE:688322) Stocks Shoot Up 35% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable
Those holding Orbbec Inc. (SHSE:688322) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 35% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 9.0% isn't as attractive.
Since its price has surged higher, given around half the companies in China's Electronic industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3.6x, you may consider Orbbec as a stock to avoid entirely with its 35.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Orbbec Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Orbbec's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Orbbec's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 11%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 41% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 86% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 26%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Orbbec's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Orbbec's P/S?
Orbbec's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Orbbec maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Electronic industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Orbbec, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
