It is doubtless a positive to see that the Beijing Tongtech Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300379) share price has gained some 127% in the last three months. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. Truth be told the share price declined 40% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.

While the last three years has been tough for Beijing Tongtech shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Because Beijing Tongtech made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last three years Beijing Tongtech saw its revenue shrink by 9.5% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The annual decline of 12% per year in that period has clearly disappointed holders. That makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. However, in this kind of situation you can sometimes find opportunity, where sentiment is negative but the company is actually making good progress.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 3.7% in the last year, Beijing Tongtech shareholders lost 1.1%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 4% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
