Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. We regret to report that long term Wuxi Boton Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300031) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 36% in three years, versus a market decline of about 15%. Even worse, it's down 16% in about a month, which isn't fun at all.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Wuxi Boton Technology isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Wuxi Boton Technology moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

The modest 0.3% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. Revenue is actually up 12% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Wuxi Boton Technology more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 9.3% in the last year, Wuxi Boton Technology shareholders lost 0.8% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 3% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
