Inly Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603598) Surges 39% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
Despite an already strong run, Inly Media Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603598) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 39% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 10% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, Inly Media may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, since almost half of all companies in the Media industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 3.8x and even P/S higher than 7x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Inly Media's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
The revenue growth achieved at Inly Media over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on Inly Media will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Inly Media would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 5.0% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that Inly Media is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Shares in Inly Media have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Inly Media revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
