Stock Analysis
Optimism for China Science Publishing & Media (SHSE:601858) has grown this past week, despite three-year decline in earnings
It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. To wit, the China Science Publishing & Media Ltd. (SHSE:601858) share price has flown 184% in the last three years. How nice for those who held the stock! It's also good to see the share price up 45% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 37% in 90 days).
The past week has proven to be lucrative for China Science Publishing & Media investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the last three years, China Science Publishing & Media failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 4.7% (annualized).
Based on these numbers, we think that the decline in earnings per share may not be a good representation of how the business has changed over the years. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 1.1% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. It could be that the revenue growth of 4.3% per year is viewed as evidence that China Science Publishing & Media is growing. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, China Science Publishing & Media's TSR for the last 3 years was 201%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 15% in the last year, China Science Publishing & Media shareholders lost 20% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 19%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for China Science Publishing & Media you should know about.
