Tibet Mineral Development (SZSE:000762) pulls back 4.4% this week, but still delivers shareholders strong 26% CAGR over 5 years
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Tibet Mineral Development Co., LTD (SZSE:000762) which saw its share price drive 215% higher over five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 24% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 32% in 90 days).
While the stock has fallen 4.4% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the five years of share price growth, Tibet Mineral Development moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the Tibet Mineral Development share price is down 54% in the last three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 20% each year. It would appear there's a real mismatch between the increasing EPS and the share price, which has declined -23% a year for three years.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Tibet Mineral Development's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Tibet Mineral Development shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 223%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
Tibet Mineral Development shareholders are down 13% for the year, but the market itself is up 12%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 26% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Before forming an opinion on Tibet Mineral Development you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
