Here's Why I Think Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology (SHSE:603077) Is An Interesting Stock
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology ( SHSE:603077 ), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like a ray of sunshine through a gap in the clouds, improving EPS is considered a good sign. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology grew its EPS from CNÂ¥0.0048 to CNÂ¥0.36, in one short year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. But the key is discerning whether something profound has changed, or if this is a just a one-off boost.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 27.0 percentage points to 37%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too .
Are Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth CNÂ¥1.5b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations between CNÂ¥25b and CNÂ¥76b, like Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology, the median CEO pay is around CNÂ¥1.7m.
Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology offered total compensation worth CNÂ¥931k to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Does Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. Big growth can make big winners, so I do think Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology is worth considering carefully. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Sichuan Hebang Biotechnology by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
