The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Fujian Cement Inc.'s (SHSE:600802) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 26%
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Fujian Cement Inc. (SHSE:600802) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 38% in that time.
Following the heavy fall in price, given about half the companies operating in China's Basic Materials industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.3x, you may consider Fujian Cement as an attractive investment with its 0.8x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Fujian Cement's Recent Performance Look Like?
For instance, Fujian Cement's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Fujian Cement, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Fujian Cement's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 31% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 30% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 20% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that Fujian Cement's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Final Word
The southerly movements of Fujian Cement's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Fujian Cement confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
