The three-year decline in earnings might be taking its toll on Shenzhen Guangju Energy (SZSE:000096) shareholders as stock falls 4.4% over the past week
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. To wit, the Shenzhen Guangju Energy Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000096) share price has flown 119% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 46% gain in the last three months.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 4.4%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over the last three years, Shenzhen Guangju Energy failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 3.7% (annualized).
Based on these numbers, we think that the decline in earnings per share may not be a good representation of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it makes sense to look into other metrics.
Languishing at just 0.3%, we doubt the dividend is doing much to prop up the share price. It may well be that Shenzhen Guangju Energy revenue growth rate of 16% over three years has convinced shareholders to believe in a brighter future. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Shenzhen Guangju Energy, it has a TSR of 137% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Shenzhen Guangju Energy has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 73% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 13% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
