GF Securities Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:000776) Business And Shares Still Trailing The Market
GF Securities Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:000776) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 16.1x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 39x and even P/E's above 76x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, GF Securities has been very sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as GF Securities' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 9.9%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 31% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 29% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 37%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why GF Securities is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of GF Securities' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
Having said that, be aware GF Securities is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
