Guotai Junan Securities Co., Ltd. (SHSE:601211) has announced that on 28th of June, it will be paying a dividend ofCN¥0.40, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. However, the dividend yield of 2.9% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

Guotai Junan Securities' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Guotai Junan Securities' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 49.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 32%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Guotai Junan Securities' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

It's comforting to see that Guotai Junan Securities has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CN¥0.20 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of CN¥0.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.0% per annum over that time. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Earnings has been rising at 3.3% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Growth of 3.3% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.

Our Thoughts On Guotai Junan Securities' Dividend

Even though the dividend was cut this year, we think Guotai Junan Securities has the ability to make consistent payments in the future. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
