17% earnings growth over 3 years has not materialized into gains for BTG Hotels (Group) (SHSE:600258) shareholders over that period
As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term BTG Hotels (Group) Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600258) shareholders, since the share price is down 49% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 19%. On top of that, the share price is down 8.0% in the last week. But this could be related to the soft market, which is down about 7.1% in the same period.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.
Check out our latest analysis for BTG Hotels (Group)
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Although the share price is down over three years, BTG Hotels (Group) actually managed to grow EPS by 59% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
With a rather small yield of just 1.6% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. Revenue is actually up 12% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching BTG Hotels (Group) more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
BTG Hotels (Group) shareholders are down 6.5% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 6.1%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 6% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
