Luolai Lifestyle Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002293) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 8.6% over the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Luolai Lifestyle Technology's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 17.7x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 37x and even P/E's above 71x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Luolai Lifestyle Technology as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Luolai Lifestyle Technology would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 31% decrease to the company's bottom line. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 42% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 23% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 39%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Luolai Lifestyle Technology's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Luolai Lifestyle Technology's P/E?

Even after such a strong price move, Luolai Lifestyle Technology's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Luolai Lifestyle Technology's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
