The Hanjia Design Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300746) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 82%. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 7.6% isn't as impressive.

Even after such a large jump in price, Hanjia Design Group may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Professional Services industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 2.6x and even P/S higher than 7x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Hanjia Design Group Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Hanjia Design Group over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Hanjia Design Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 17% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 25% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 34% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Hanjia Design Group's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What Does Hanjia Design Group's P/S Mean For Investors?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Hanjia Design Group's P/S close to the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It's no surprise that Hanjia Design Group maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
