Even With A 27% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Beijing Career International Co., Ltd's (SZSE:300662) Performance Completely
Beijing Career International Co., Ltd (SZSE:300662) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 37% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Beijing Career International may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.8x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 33x and even P/E's higher than 61x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Beijing Career International could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Beijing Career International's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 24%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 4.3% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 25% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 26% each year, which is not materially different.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Beijing Career International's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Final Word
Beijing Career International's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Beijing Career International's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
