Shareholders in Sichuan Jinshi TechnologyLtd (SZSE:002951) have lost 58%, as stock drops 14% this past week
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Sichuan Jinshi Technology Co.,Ltd (SZSE:002951) share price has gained 14% in the last three months. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 63% in that time. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. But it could be that the fall was overdone.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Sichuan Jinshi TechnologyLtd wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
Over half a decade Sichuan Jinshi TechnologyLtd reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 43% for each year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. It seems appropriate, then, that the share price slid about 10% annually during that time. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and don't grow revenues. You might be better off spending your money on a leisure activity. You'd want to research this company pretty thoroughly before buying, it looks a bit too risky for us.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Sichuan Jinshi TechnologyLtd, it has a TSR of -58% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Sichuan Jinshi TechnologyLtd shareholders are down 16% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 15%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 10% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Sichuan Jinshi TechnologyLtd better, we need to consider many other factors.
