More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Sinostar Cable Co., Ltd's (SZSE:300933) Shares After Tumbling 28%
Sinostar Cable Co., Ltd (SZSE:300933) shares have had a horrible month, losing 28% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 33% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Sinostar Cable may still be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 37.4x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios under 27x and even P/E's lower than 16x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Sinostar Cable over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Sinostar Cable's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 15%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 42% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 36% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's alarming that Sinostar Cable's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Sinostar Cable's P/E?
Sinostar Cable's P/E hasn't come down all the way after its stock plunged. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Sinostar Cable revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
