Yizumi Holdings Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300415) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 8.9% isn't as attractive.

Although its price has surged higher, Yizumi Holdings may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 22.6x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 30x and even P/E's higher than 54x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Yizumi Holdings certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

Yizumi Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 19% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 39% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 29% as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 36% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we can see why Yizumi Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Yizumi Holdings' P/E close to the market median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Yizumi Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
