Hanyu Group's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Hanyu Group's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 74% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 27.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 73%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Hanyu Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that Hanyu Group has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 9 years was CN¥0.111 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was CN¥0.26. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.9% a year over that time. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that Hanyu Group has been growing its earnings per share at 8.0% a year over the past five years. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.
Our Thoughts On Hanyu Group's Dividend
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Hanyu Group that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
