Shenzhen Colibri Technologies Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002957) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 32% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 25% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 30x, you may still consider Shenzhen Colibri Technologies as an attractive investment with its 21.1x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Shenzhen Colibri Technologies certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Shenzhen Colibri Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 256%. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 6.4% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 68% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 41% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that Shenzhen Colibri Technologies is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Shenzhen Colibri Technologies' P/E

Shenzhen Colibri Technologies' stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Shenzhen Colibri Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
