Returns On Capital Signal Tricky Times Ahead For Runjian (SZSE:002929)
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. However, after investigating Runjian (SZSE:002929), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Runjian, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.05 = CN¥334m ÷ (CN¥17b - CN¥9.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
So, Runjian has an ROCE of 5.0%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 6.1% average generated by the Construction industry.

Above you can see how the current ROCE for Runjian compares to its prior returns on capital, but there's only so much you can tell from the past. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free analyst report for Runjian .
What Does the ROCE Trend For Runjian Tell Us?
In terms of Runjian's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 7.6%, but since then they've fallen to 5.0%. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
On a side note, Runjian's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 60% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. If current liabilities hadn't increased as much as they did, the ROCE could actually be even lower. What this means is that in reality, a rather large portion of the business is being funded by the likes of the company's suppliers or short-term creditors, which can bring some risks of its own.
The Bottom Line
In summary, Runjian is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Unsurprisingly, the stock has only gained 14% over the last five years, which potentially indicates that investors are accounting for this going forward. Therefore, if you're looking for a multi-bagger, we'd propose looking at other options.
Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Runjian (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should know about.
