Little Excitement Around Runjian Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:002929) Earnings As Shares Take 27% Pounding
Runjian Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002929) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 21% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, Runjian's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 30x and even P/E's above 53x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Runjian certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Runjian's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 11%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 62% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 20% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 35% growth , the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Runjian is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
The softening of Runjian's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Runjian maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for Runjian that you need to take into consideration.
