The Minera Valparaiso (SNSE:MINERA) Share Price Has Gained 23% And Shareholders Are Hoping For More
On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Minera Valparaiso S.A. (SNSE:MINERA) share price is up 23% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 8.6% lower than it was three years ago.

While Minera Valparaiso made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
In the last year Minera Valparaiso saw its revenue shrink by 9.3%. The lacklustre gain of 23% over twelve months, is not a bad result given the falling revenue. Generally we're pretty unenthusiastic about loss making stocks that are not growing revenue.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Minera Valparaiso, it has a TSR of 41% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Minera Valparaiso shareholders gained a total return of 41% during the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 8% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Minera Valparaiso better, we need to consider many other factors.
