It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Vifor Pharma (VTX:VIFN). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Vifor Pharma's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. We can see that in the last three years Vifor Pharma grew its EPS by 9.6% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. I note that, last year, Vifor Pharma's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. The good news is that Vifor Pharma is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 7.6 percentage points to 22%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Vifor Pharma Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Vifor Pharma has a market capitalization of CHF8.7b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at CHF1.8b. Coming in at 21% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. Very encouraging.
Does Vifor Pharma Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of Vifor Pharma is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. Of course, just because Vifor Pharma is growing does not mean it is undervalued.
