ObsEva SA's (VTX:OBSN) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the Biotechs industry in Switzerland, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.1x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How ObsEva Has Been Performing
For example, consider that ObsEva's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

ObsEva's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 12%. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 48% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why ObsEva's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.
What We Can Learn From ObsEva's P/S?
It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of ObsEva revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
