Cosmo Pharmaceuticals N.V. (VTX:COPN) Stocks Shoot Up 35% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable

The Cosmo Pharmaceuticals N.V. (VTX:COPN) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 35%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 45%.

After such a large jump in price, Cosmo Pharmaceuticals may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 25.3x, since almost half of all companies in Switzerland have P/E ratios under 19x and even P/E's lower than 14x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Cosmo Pharmaceuticals as its earnings have been rising slower than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Cosmo Pharmaceuticals would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's bottom line as the year before. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 91% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its uninspiring short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 24% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 12% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Cosmo Pharmaceuticals' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Cosmo Pharmaceuticals' P/E

Cosmo Pharmaceuticals' P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Cosmo Pharmaceuticals maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
