Here's Why I Think Zurich Insurance Group (VTX:ZURN) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Zurich Insurance Group (VTX:ZURN). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Zurich Insurance Group's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Zurich Insurance Group managed to grow EPS by 14% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that Zurich Insurance Group's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Zurich Insurance Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 29% to US$71b. That's progress.

Are Zurich Insurance Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a CHF61b company like Zurich Insurance Group. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$114m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

Is Zurich Insurance Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Zurich Insurance Group is that it is growing profits. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Zurich Insurance Group by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.

Although Zurich Insurance Group certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
