There's No Escaping medmix AG's (VTX:MEDX) Muted Revenues Despite A 28% Share Price Rise
medmix AG (VTX:MEDX) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 14% over that time.
Even after such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Switzerland's Medical Equipment industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 3.9x, you may still consider medmix as a highly attractive investment with its 1x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does medmix's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
medmix hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like medmix's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Still, the latest three year period was better as it's delivered a decent 5.8% overall rise in revenue. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.5% per annum as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 7.6% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why medmix's P/S is falling short industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On medmix's P/S
Even after such a strong price move, medmix's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As expected, our analysis of medmix's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
