Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Alcon (VTX:ALC). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Alcon's Improving Profits
Alcon has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, Alcon's EPS grew from US$0.68 to US$1.97, over the previous 12 months. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 190%.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Alcon maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 8.5% to US$9.5b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are Alcon Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Alcon has a market capitalisation of CHF37b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Holding US$51m worth of stock in the company is no laughing matter and insiders will be committed in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.
Should You Add Alcon To Your Watchlist?
Alcon's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. That EPS growth certainly is attention grabbing, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke our interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So based on this quick analysis, we do think it's worth considering Alcon for a spot on your watchlist. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Alcon is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
