Investors Appear Satisfied With Leonteq AG's (VTX:LEON) Prospects As Shares Rocket 26%
Leonteq AG (VTX:LEON) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 11% over that time.
Following the firm bounce in price, Leonteq's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 62.8x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Switzerland, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 20x and even P/E's below 14x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Leonteq could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
Leonteq's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 71%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 96% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 129% each year during the coming three years according to the two analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 8.8% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why Leonteq is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Leonteq's P/E
Leonteq's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Leonteq maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 4 warning signs for Leonteq you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
