Stock Analysis
Cargojet's (TSE:CJT) investors will be pleased with their respectable 75% return over the last year
Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Cargojet Inc. (TSE:CJT) share price is up 73% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 27% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 24% lower than it was three years ago.
So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 1 year and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year Cargojet saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While some may see this as temporary, we're a skeptical bunch, and so we're a little surprised to see the share price go up. We might get a clue to explain the share price move by looking to other metrics.
We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.0% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. Unfortunately Cargojet's fell 4.6% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Cargojet has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 75% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 7%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Cargojet (at least 1 which is significant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
