In the last year, many Topicus.com Inc. (CVE:TOI) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Topicus.com Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider, Robert Alfred Scotchmer, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$5.4m worth of shares at a price of CA$134 each. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is CA$119. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid CA$31k for 238.00 shares. But insiders sold 69.28k shares worth CA$9.0m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Topicus.com shares, than buying. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. We've seen more insider selling than insider buying at Topicus.com recently. In that time, insiders dumped CA$7.2m worth of shares. Does Topicus.com Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Topicus.com insiders own 1.6% of the company, currently worth about CA$156m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
