I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Tricon Residential (TSE:TCN) Passed With Ease
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Tricon Residential (TSE:TCN). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Tricon Residential Growing?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Who among us would not applaud Tricon Residential's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 39%, compound, over the last three years? That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of Tricon Residential's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. On the one hand, Tricon Residential's EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. So if EBIT margins can stabilize, this top-line growth should pay off for shareholders.

While we live in the present moment at all times, there's no doubt in my mind that the future matters more than the past. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for Tricon Residential?
Are Tricon Residential Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
We do note that, in the last year, insiders sold -US$230k worth of shares. But that's far less than the US$3.7m insiders spend purchasing stock. I find this encouraging because it suggests they are optimistic about the Tricon Residential's future. It is also worth noting that it was President Gary Berman who made the biggest single purchase, worth CA$993k, paying CA$16.29 per share.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Tricon Residential bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. With a whopping US$101m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.
Does Tricon Residential Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Tricon Residential's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. Just as heartening; insiders both own and are buying more stock. Because of the potential that it has reached an inflection point, I'd suggest Tricon Residential belongs on the top of your watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Tricon Residential has 7 warning signs (and 2 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
